What is Burma Point?
Burma Point is a political organization established in 2005 to strengthen worldwide support of human rights and democracy movements of Burma through both non-governmental and governmental efforts. An independent, dedicated and enthusiastic group of overseas Burmese in New York currently governs Burma Point.
With its independent fund-raising efforts, Burma Point helps pro-democracy activities through various Burmese democratic organizations. Principally, it supports the leading political party National League for Democracy (NLD), which won the 1990 general election overwhelmingly but which was never allowed to govern by the Burmese military regime.
What is it's Mission?
Burma Point is guided by the belief that the people of Burma can restore the basic rights, freedom and Justice that they lost under the repressive military regime by developing people-elected democratic institutions, procedures and values. In that regard, the vast majority of Burmese people demonstrated their strong desire for democracy by electing NLD in hopes of regaining their inherent rights and freedom. Only with the participation of people-elected democratic institutions will there be a light of democracy in Burma. Therefore, Burma Point strongly supports the legitimately-elected NLD party, led by Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
What are it's Objectives?
Burma Point helps strengthen activities which are guided by the following objectives:
- To engage in activities aimed at freeing Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners.
- To encourage international involvement of human rights groups in Burma's democracy movements.
- To encourage and strengthen the participation of individuals, organizations and institutions who struggle for democracy in Burma.
